Concrete Carpark Inspection with 3D Reality Capture

Carpark

Overview

  • FPrimeC Solutions was engaged by the Town of Oakville to conduct a digital inspection and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of a multi-level parking structure in Ontario.

  • Eagle INSPECT software was used to streamline data collection, condition assessment, and reporting.

  • Intelligent digital inspection enabled the team to significantly reduce both inspection and reporting time while improving accuracy.

Challenge

The Town of Oakville needed to assess an aging four-level concrete parking facility to inform maintenance and repairs. Built with precast concrete elements and prestressed double tee beams, the structure showed signs of joint seal deterioration, leading to water infiltration and localised steel corrosion, especially at beam edges. Due to the size and complexity of the facility, traditional inspection methods would have been time-consuming, labour-intensive, and lacked the precision needed for effective planning.

Solution

To tackle these challenges, FPrimeC leveraged Eagle INSPECT to streamline data collection and enable a more efficient, insight-driven inspection process.

With Eagle INSPECT, the inspection process was transformed in the following ways:

  • Location-based Data Collection: Inspection findings were pinned directly to structural drawings, providing contextual insights and reducing manual tracking.

  • Integrated Testing Results: Visual inspection data, non-destructive test (NDT) results, and intrusive assessments were consolidated into one cohesive reporting environment.

  • 360° Video Capture: Used to perform rapid and detailed inspections of key structural elements. This created a visual record of hard-to-reach areas without the need for elevated platforms.

  • 3D Reality Capture Integration: Enhanced video data with spatial depth and improved review capability.

  • Efficient Reporting: Customisable reports were generated quickly, supported by a centralised data structure and real-time collaboration tools.

The team used a wireless Insta360 camera with a telescopic arm to document structural defects during inspections. This setup provided flexible, high-resolution visuals and reduced time spent on-site.

Results

Eagle INSPECT enabled the FPrimeC engineers to complete the evaluation with greater speed, precision, and confidence. The intelligent software:

  • Reduced field time and manual effort through streamlined data capture.

  • Improved collaboration and transparency with centralised, real-time data access.

  • Delivered professional, detailed reports more quickly and with higher accuracy.

  • Created a visual archive of the structure’s condition, aiding future decision-making.

By leveraging Eagle INSPECT’s advanced capabilities, the team delivered a comprehensive condition assessment that helped the Town of Oakville make informed choices about maintenance priorities, on time, and with greater insight than ever before.
